8 Great Kids' Tech Free Games & Activities for Summer
Not gonna lie, we suffer from it here too... Device addiction.... it plagues people at all ages (including me 😬) and with summer here, it is as important as ever to have a list of tech-free options for kids. As an alternative to activities that will keep your kids glued to a screen all day, here is a list of games and activities that require no device at all, which should keep your kids (and you!) plenty occupied!
Water Balloon Dodgeball
This one is pretty simple and a perfect activity for a hot summer day. A little twist on good old Dogdeball, using water balloons instead of foam or bouncy balls. Just be careful that no one aims for the head or other sensitive body parts!
Nature Scavenger Hunt
A fun way to get kids to interact with nature; it's super simple and requires virtually no supplies! This is a great one for kids' to take their doll or stuffy along with them to join in the fun, especially if you have a From the Pear Tree Papoose to carry them in. Rainy Day Games
Rainy days are the days that we typically allow the tech to come out (or on, so to speak). However if you end up in a long stretch of rainy days, it's great to have some non-tech indoor ideas too.
Board or Card Games
Board games are always a great indoor option and a great way to get the family together around the table. We are a bit of a competitive family so we love the competition aspect of them. The other great thing is the range of ages they appeal to as well as the huge variety to choose from. We love Uno and Mario Kart Monopoly Gamer. My son loves pretty much anything Mario, so this is an easy sell to get him to turn the tech off and play with me.
Slip 'n' Slide
I remember playing on a Slip and Slides when I was a Kid! They can be purchased at most Big Box stores, or you can also make your own! Check out how-to on Wired.
Hide and Seek
It's a classic -- kids love it, and it'll keep them busy for a little while! Unless you are like my son who reuses the same spots over and over... LOL . He is a much better "seeker" than a "hider".
This one can be played indoors, with painter's tape, or outdoors, with chalk. It's a great activity that keeps kids moving.
You can't really go wrong with ball games, whether it's basketball, soccer, road hockey, baseball or just playing catch. With or without fancy equipment, it's always a great way to get kids outside and running around.
These are just a few ideas ... I am certain there are many many more. Let me know in the comments what are your favourite go-to Tech-Free Summer activities that you do with your family!
